D.Gukesh has already earned Rs 1.67 crore after just three matches in the World Chess Championship 2024, as we await a decision in the world title match. Gukesh won the third game in the 14-game classical match series on Wednesday, leveling the score against Chinese Grandmaster and reigning world champion Ding Liren.
Liren took the lead with a win in the first game on Monday—his first victory in 304 days. Gukesh drew the second match before winning the third game, as Ding lost on time. This marked 18-year-old Gukesh’s first-ever victory in the World Chess Championship as he aims to become the youngest world champion.
“It feels great. The last two days, I was happy with my play. Today was even better. I feel good at the board. Today, I just managed to outplay my opponent, which is always very nice,” Gukesh said after securing his inaugural win.
According to the prize money rules for the World Chess Championship 2024, Gukesh is guaranteed to take home Rs 1.67 crore with this first win. Under FIDE rules, each win awards a player $200,000 (approximately Rs 1.67 crore), and the remaining prize money from a total pool of $2.5 million (around Rs 20.8 crore) will be split equally between the two competitors. This means Liren is also set to earn $200,000 for his victory in the first round of the championship.
As per FIDE’s rules, if the championship goes into a tiebreaker after 14 matches, the eventual winner will be awarded $1.3 million (approximately Rs 10.83 crore), while the runner-up will receive $1.2 million (around Rs 10 crore). Currently, the World Chess Championship 2024 is tied at 1.5-1.5 between Liren and Gukesh after three matches.
The first player to reach 7.5 points will win the world title. There will be no match on Thursday, as it is a rest day. The World Chess Championship 2024 will resume on Friday, November 29, with Game 4 at Resorts World Sentosa, starting at 2:30 PM IST. After three matches on November 29, 30, and December 1, there will be another rest day on December 2, followed by Game 7 on December 3.

3. The time control is 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves, and then 15 minutes for the remainder of the game. A 30-second increment per move starts from move 61.
