Syria Civil War Live News Updates: Following the capture of Damascus, Syria’s rebel forces have implemented a curfew starting at 4 pm local time until 5 am the next day.

Syria Civil War News Live Updates:

The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has resigned and left the country after negotiations with various participants in the ongoing armed conflict. According to the ministry, “As a result of discussions between B. Assad and several parties involved in the armed conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic, he decided to resign from the presidency and left the country, issuing instructions for a peaceful transfer of power.

Russia did not participate in these negotiations,” as reported by Reuters. Following their takeover of Damascus, Syrian rebel forces imposed a curfew in the city from 4 PM local time until 5 AM the next morning. In their first announcement on state television, the rebels declared that they had “freed Damascus” and overthrown Assad’s regime while releasing all imprisoned individuals. Additionally, the rebels stormed Iran’s embassy after capturing Damascus, leading Iraq to evacuate its embassy staff and relocate to Lebanon, according to multiple state media outlets.

Current Status of the War:

With their advance into Damascus, the rebels aim to deliver a significant blow to the Assad government, which now controls only 3 of the 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia, and Tartus. The Syrian army continues operations against “terrorist groups” in the key cities of Hama, Homs, and in the Deraa countryside, as reported by Reuters. Meanwhile, Lebanon has closed all its land border crossings with Syria, except for one that links Beirut with Damascus. Similarly, Jordan has also shut down a border crossing with Syria.

How Did the Crisis Start?

Rebel forces had been held back for over a decade with military support from Iran and Russia. However, Al-Assad faced a surprise offensive from the country’s northwest. His government quickly lost territory without effective military defense or assistance from one of its strongest allies, Iran, which started evacuating its military commanders and personnel from Syria on Friday.
